day

i began the morning late. ish.

after allowing my alarm to go off every five minutes for nearly an hour, i finally dredged myself up out of bed and hurriedly readied myself for the day. ran downstairs, gulped some cereal, hopped out the door to walk to work.

a few weeks ago i began working for ann hynes, that magical jeweler of pretty things. she has a small studio on race street, maybe a mile from my house. the morning walk is lovely: cool, not too sunny, quiet. strolling down school street, the sweet voice of rosie thomas sang in my ears, and i inhaled the so-good morning air.

there was a fog delay this morning; small groups of children peppered the curbs, waiting for the bus.
"hey!" yelled one small girl from the sidewalk opposite mine, "i like your shoes!"
"thanks!" i yelled back with a grin. you know you have pretty great shoes on when you receive compliments from eight-year-old strangers across the street. score.

i really love this new job of mine. in addition to photography & graphic design, i help make the jewelry--nearly every bit of it's handmade. it's pretty amazing.
putting together these eclectic chains is the bane of my existence:

but it's a good bane, i suppose. it's quite therapeutic. get a good rhythm going after a while.
i've been getting into the more dangerous stuff lately. yes! there's nothing quite like the smell of molten silver (and a bit of scorched fingertips here or there). soldering is great fun.

sometimes ann'll make me a list of the things she'd like me to do that day. a few days ago, the first item on the list was "blacken little hearts." oh dear, thought i, that sounds awfully depressing. it brought to mind some sinister being, perhaps along the lines of that creepy child snatcher in chitty chitty bang bang, causing small children to sob. no worries though--i just had to sharpie the initials stamped into little silver hearts, so you'd actually be able to see them as letters rather than just indented shadows. phew.

today ann brought me berry yogurt and i ate it on my walk home.

yup, i like my job a lot.

I really enjoyed reading this-keep it up--it is a great comfort to go to your blog and flicker since Howard girls have been missing in action in these areas. Thanks

That child snatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was horrid. I used to close my eyes and sing to myself when he came onto the screen.

"blacken little hearts." That's just sad. I'm glad it turned out all right. Heh.

Your job sounds fun. I'm half-jealous.

I like that idea best.
It's very good.
In fact, I'm excited about picking out a color. That'll do, that'll do. Good job, annie.

In our English class, the other day, we highlighted with crayons. We each got to pick out four colors. Mine weren't very thrilling. The pickings her slim when it got to me.

But, I did get "seagreen." I like that name.
