my name is annie huntington.
my history teacher, however, is under the impression that my name is anne hutchinson.
anne hutchinson was a nice little puritan lady from back in the day with "blasphemous ideas," and history textbooks far and wide devote at least a sentence or two to her. she was also was featured in the exam we were given last week.
i find it interesting how our names do look pretty darn similar at a glance. if you're getting on in years and reading names off a list, i can see how my name could easily morph into hers. and if you happen to be a history teacher, then gee, the long-deceased anne hutchinson is certainly on your mind, and annie huntington is just some girl twelve feet away brushing day-old eraser shavings off her desk and trying very earnestly not to mix up north carolina and south carolina.
so the time comes when bradley hollers that he goes by brad, and kevan insists that her name is pronounced "keevan," not "kevin." well, i think being called anne hutchinson is awfully amusing, and i don't think i'll correct our good ol' teacher any time soon.

Ha ha ha. I've never had my name messed up too terribly. The only thing that happens to me is that occasionally my teacher will call me by one of my sisters' names. But, Anne Hutchinson is quite the stretch. That's amusing.
Annie, I've heard that when we read, we only read the consonants. I don't know if that explains any of your teacher's confusion. -Max
Hmm, after giving this some thought I remember my Nana ,when calling to me, would come out with "Come here Helen, Rebecca, Barbara, Suzanne"! (Her two sisters, my mother, then me:-) Well, don' 'cha know, I now do the same thing!
I also realized that there are some names I just can't keep straight in my head!(Do you have any of those)? The Christine, Kristen, Kirsten names mess me up.
I'm glad you have mercy on your teacher and find it amusing.
You know it was Mrs. T-see names mixed up even in the Blogosphere:-)
max, that's really interesting. it could definitely explain why i always mix up the vowels in the word "permanent." and now i am reading words and wondering if i'm actually reading them at all, and how are they suddenly appearing in my head? and now i am thoroughly bewildered by the human brain.
mrs. t., i never mix up those particular names because christine is from summer camp when i was nine, kristen had an enormous beanie baby collection when we were seven, and kirsten was swedish and had braids and sang songs about birds in some books i read a long time ago. but i do confuse the names siobhan and dierdre for some reason. probably because i never knew how they were pronounced until rather recently, and suddenly all the siobhans and dierdres i'd ever read about in books were no longer themselves.
also, funny and slightly related: whenever emma and i see my friend's grandmother, she says, "hey, emma and whatever!" she literally calls me "whatever" as if it were my name. no hesitation or anything. it makes me laugh so hard i cry.

i want to write why i like this so much instead of workin' on this paper 'o mine...but i can't. maybe i'll tell you sometime though.
your blog is extremely enjoyable to read, A.h.
twinAnnie, your last comment made me laugh...Isn't it interesting that she doesn't call you "whoever" or "whomever", but "whatever"....What's that about?
ha! ma! didn't i ever tell you about that? (what's with this "twinAnnie" business?)
