so, i'm writing a research paper on amelia earhart.
...while researching, i found this rather lovely poem. i really just love it.
it's by kate timmers, and it's called
Beginnings
In a Kansas schoolhouse in 1938
a girl in gingham
will draw a picture of me, winged,
a breasted mock-Icarus
plummeting into the sea.
She gives me long hair.
Why the wings don't save me I don't know.
In this version, as in all, I crash.
No one lets me defy
gravity, not even in chalk
on a slate. Millennia of myths
prevent it, prevent upturned heads
from searching the skies instead
of the beaches and the waters
devouring them. Therefore
with this end let us begin.

Did she write it in reference to Amelia?
Okay-cool! I decided to Google Kate Timmers; when I did, your blog came up eighth on the list:-)
heh heh! that's funny. actually, i'm not surprised...i found the poem in some strange periodical/newspaper research database that i was using through chesapeake college. they have a subscription or something. it's probably illegal for me to re-post it... i don't even know... mmh. heh. oh well. i'm just sharin' the love! :)
--yes yes, she did write it in reference to amelia.
